I would say go with the 11". You can cover more ground with it at places like the beach and at parks. If you were only relic hunting in heavy iron then the 9" would probably be a better choice.

Normally I'd say the 9" but with the new 6 x 9 elliptical coil coming out the first of next year I'd say get the 11"

I only use the 9'' coil,the 11'' is a good all round size but the bigger 11"×13" would give you extra depth and ground coverage but it just does not feel right on the rod,nose heavy and not very nice...
